Abstract

918,666. Resistors with spark gaps. WELWYN ELECTRIC Ltd. April 13, 1961 [April 20, 1960], No. 13883/60. Class 37. An electrical resistor comprises a hollow resistance member, end terminals and at least one electrode extending inside the hollow member from one end terminal, part-way towards the other end terminal so as to define a sparkgap. In the Figure a hollow carrier member 1 carries a resistive coating 2 which is electrically connected to end caps 3. The outside of the member is coated with a layer of silicone rubber. Within the member 1 are two platinum, copper, or tungsten electrodes 4 to define a spark-gap 5, which may be adjustable by having one electrode in the form of a screw running through one of the end caps 3. The resistive coating on member 1 may be a wire winding, a film of metal, metal alloy, or a conducting oxide. The member 1 could be made of high resistivity semi-conducting material, or a composition of carbon dispersed in an organic resin, or a sintered or vitrified inorganic coating such as can be made from metallic oxides. If the member is of ceramic material a large number of discharges may produce a conductive coating on the inside of the tube which form a shunt across the resistive element. To overcome this a tube of fused silica may be fitted inside the member or the member may be made of fused silica. The hollow member may be gas-filled with difluoro-dichloro-methane compounds.
