Abstract

739,136. Resistance coatings and deposits; mounting terminals; direct connection between conductors. ERG. INDUSTRIAL CORPORATION, Ltd. June 22, 1954 [Oct. 16, 1953], No. 28643/53. Classes 37 and 38 (1). The resistance element is a metal oxide or metal coating which overlaps the metal terminal coatings. The latter have a thickness of the order of not more than four times the thickness of the resistance coating. In Fig. 1 an insulating rod 10 has platinum and silver terminal coatings 11, 12 and end caps 13 and the resistance film 14 extends on to the platinum coating 11 and may as shown overlie silver coating 12 and end cap 13. In Fig. 2 the resistance film 14 contacts silver coating 16 and overlies end cap 13 and conductive cement 17 covers the resistance film 14 to beyond the end of silver coating 16 along the rod 10. In a modification to Fig. 2 shown in Fig. 3 connecting wires 13a are used and the edge or end 16a of silver coating 16 is 45 degrees and the edge of cement layer 17 oppositely 45 degrees in relation to rod 10 so that in some areas the cement 17 overlies the silver coating 16 and the resistance film 14 and in other areas overlies the resistance film 14 only. The silver coating 16 may be formed by dipping in silver oxide or resinate and firing at 500‹ C. and the conductive cement 17 is suitably a low-temperature curing (say below 150‹ C.) conductive particles/plastic binder mixture or silicone cement or silvergraphite mixture. The resistance film 14 may be of " Nichrome " (Registered - Trade Mark) applied by vaporization on to a roughened glass rod 10 and subsequently formed into a helix. Finally as at 15 there is provided a protective coating of enamel, varnish or paint.
