Abstract
1,161,180. Variable resistors. TRW Inc. 21 Sept., 1967 [28 Sept., 1966], No. 43099/67. Heading H1S. An adjustable resistor comprises a tubular insulating casing 12 enclosing a resistance element (film) 14 carried on a substrate rotatable relative to the casing, a contact 16 slidably engaging the resistance element film and moving therealong upon relative rotation of the casing and element, the contact being connected to one of the end terminal wires 26b by conductive means within the casing. The substrate may be of plastics or ceramic material and the resistive film of carbon, a metal, a metal alloy or mixture above or in a glass or plastics binder. In the Fig. 1 arrangement this connection to 26b is effected through spring fingers 54 on contact 16 which, on relative rotation of the casing and element, slide in a groove 38 in contact with a conductive strip 42 therein, this movement being produced by a projection 50 on the contact 16 which engages a helical groove in the element. In another arrangement (Fig. 3, not shown), a helical groove is provided in the inner surface of the casing, a contact arrangement rotatable with the resistance element having a rib slidably fitting in this groove and having contacts which interconnect a variable point on the resistance element film with a conductive strip on the element substrate.
