Abstract
1,087,773. Variable resistors. BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS Inc. Nov. 10, 1965 [Dec. 2, 1964], No. 47811/65. Heading H1S. In a rotary or rectilinear variable resistor or potentiometer sparking is avoided, when the contacts of wiper 22 leave the resistance track 10, by arranging for the collector track contacts to leave the collector track 16 first. This may be effected by making contacts co-operating with the collector 64 (Fig. 5, not shown) narrower than the resistance contacts 62. The resistance track may be provided with intermediate terminals 24, 26 (Fig. 2) and these may be used as input terminals. The resistance may be of ceramic material containing metal particles or of a non- conducting binder (plastics material) containing carbon or other conductive particles. The collector track may be of gold or silver and the terminal strips may be metallic or of conductive silver paint.
