Abstract
758,246. Refining iron. NEWTON, CHAMBERS & CO., Ltd. Jan. 29, 1954 [Oct. 29, 1952], No. 27211/52. Class 72. [Also in Group XII] A cupola shaft 2 and a coke hopper 4 are disposed side by side, the latter opening into the shaft at 8, opposite and below secondary tuyeres 22, and above main tuyeres 20, a hinged flap 12 being provided on top of the hopper 4 so that charge material can be fed from the skip 10 either into that shaft through the flap 14 or into the hopper. Air from a fan 36 passes in turn through a duct 38, a recuperator 26 of the type disclosed in Specification 758,247 [Group XIII], and a duct 40 into the windbox 42, a valvecontrolled branch pipe 46 supplying cold air to the secondary tuyeres 22, above which is a shoulder 24 constricting the shaft and partly supporting the charge. More than a single hopper may be provided and the coke therein may be positively fed into the shaft by a blast of the preheated air or by a screw feed. The cupola hearth may be filled with metallurgical coke, a mechanically weaker coke being supplied from the hopper, the bottom of which may be closed by a flap valve. Further economies are said to be obtained in that the CO formed is burnt to CO 2 within the charge.
