757,877. Rubber threads. ANDREWSALDERFER CO. Dec. 21, 1954 [Feb. 19, 1954], No. 36894/54. Class 70 In a method of manufacturing elastic threads held together in ribbon form by easily frangible bands, a sheet of unvulcanized natural. and/or synthetic rubber is subdivided into threads which are separated, some or all then being coated with adhesive and all attenuated by drawing, and the attenuated threads are grouped together into ribbon form and vulcanized. The unvulcanized rubber sheet 1 is divided into threads by cutting knives 2, 3, and is then passed under a roller 5 where alternate threads are separated to form two groups, one group 6 passing under a guide roller 9 to be immersed in adhesive in a tank 10, and the other group 7 passing over a roller 8. Both groups 6, 7 may alternatively be passed through separate adhesive applying devices. The two groups are reunited by passage between rollers 14, 15, and are then passed around stretching rollers 16, 17, the roller 16 being driven at a 'greater surface speed than the rollers 14, 15. A concave bar 18 is located between the rollers 14, 15 and the roller 16 in order to keep the threads together. If desired the roller 12 may be driven at a faster surface speed than the roller 16 and a concave bar 20 may then be provided for maintaining the threads together between the rollers 16, 17. The threads are passed from the roller 17 over a further concave bar 25 and through rollers 22, 23, and are then led over rotated heated drums 28 to 32 to be vulcanized. and form a ribbon of vulcanized threads held together by the adhesive. The threads leaving the rollers 22, 23 may, alternatively, be adhered to a belt and passed through a vulcanizing oven.
