Abstract

1499836 Resin-fibre sheet A J SPAAY 30 July 1975 [19 Aug 1974] 31945/75 Heading D1R A fibre-reinforced resin material comprises a layer of cut glass fibres 4, 8 and of parallel 15 and tangled 6 endless glass fibres embedded in a synthetic resin composition, the fibres being arranged such that a layer of parallel endless fibres 15 is situated between two layers of endless tangled fibres 6 the three layers of endless fibres being situated between two layers 4 of cut fibres. On sheet I is deposited in sequence a layer of resin 2, a layer of 5 cm fibres 4, a layer of randomly orientated continuous filaments 6, a layer of 2.5 cm fibres 8 and a layer of resin 10 backed by a sheet 9. The assembly then follows a meandering course through an offset double row of rollers of which rollers 11, 12 are shown to produce a degree of mixing and impregnation without destroying the layered structure. Sheets 1 and 9 are removed and a layer of continuous filaments 15 aligned parallel with the longitudinal axis of the resin-fibre strip is laid on part or all of the width of the strip. A layer of resin may be applied to the layer of parallel filaments 15. The resin may contain further fibres or randomly disposed filaments. The resin fibre strip is folded about the longitudinal axis or a line parallel to this axis by guideplate 17 and roller (18, Fig. 3b, not shown). Rollers (23, Fig. 3c, not shown) inclined relative to the supporting surface of the strip complete the folding. When the strip is folded in half the parallel filaments 15 are deposited on one side of the strip. Alternatively the outer parts of the strip may be folded inwards to give a 3 or 2 layer strip (Figs. 4 and 5, respectively, not shown). Resin may be introduced from wide slit nozzles between the individual stations for supplying the fibres. A second strip may be laminated to the first strip. The strip is slightly stretched by rollers so that the parallel fibres are stressed, unless the strip is to be moulded by pressing in such a manner that it is subject to considerable longitudinal stretching.
