Abstract
717,072. Honeycomb paper; compound sheet materials. CALIFORNIA REINFORCED, PLASTICS CO. May 28, 1952, No. 13540/52. Classes 96 and 140. A honeycomb structure is made by applying lines of adhesive 10a and 10b on opposite sides of a web 18 of flexible material drawn from a roll 17 with the lines on opposite sides out of register, and lapping the adhesive-coated web upon itself to build up a stack of superposed layers, e.g. on a horizontally-reciprocating table 31, while continuously applying pressure to the stack along its whole length, e.g. by two systems of travelling belts 46 running around rollers 42, 43 and 44 mounted in fixed bearings, and 46a running around a similar set of rollers 42a, 43a and 44a. The belts 46, 46a, which are out of register with one another and with the lines of adhesive on their side of the web, are pressed against the top of the stack by freely rotatable rollers 45. The adhesive lines are applied by discs 26 on a driven shaft 25 which are fed by a driven roller 23 dipping in an adhesive trough 22 and may be partly dried, e.g. by infra-red lamps in a casing 27. The adhesive-coated web is drawn downwardly towards table 31 by co-operating discs 54, 54a on driven shafts 53, 53a. To accommodate the growing stack, table 31 is spring-mounted on a carriage 15, which is constrained to move horizontally by sets of rollers 13 and 14. The carriage is reciprocated by a driven cog 36 which acts on a rack 35 attached to the carriage, and is periodically reversed when one of two lugs 66, 67 on the carriage strikes reversing lever 65. A second rack 52 attached to the carriage causes rotation of cog 51 and hence of belts 46. The flexible material, which may be impregnated with phenolaldehyde resin, may be paper, cloth, glass fabric, or aluminium foil. The material is used as a lightweight core in laminated panels, bulkheads, or fuselage walls.
