Abstract

876,220. Laminates; honeycomb paper. MAY, G., and GORELL, J. H. Sept. 12, 1957 [Sept. 17, 1956], No. 28421/56. Classes 96 and 140. [Also in Group XXII] A structural honeycomb material is produced by securing together layers of sheet material having a machine direction to form a stack by means of an adhesive distributed in parallel elongated securing zones which cross, and are spaced apart in, the machine direction of the sheet material and are so positioned that the securing zones at one face of a layer are staggered with reference to the securing zones at the other face thereof and forming the stack into a plurality of expandable packs of strips of the sheet material by cutting it in the machine direction. The machine direction is the direction in which the sheet material has passed in web form through machinery (e.g. a paper mill, loom or rolling mill) in the course of its manufacture. Sheet materials referred to are paper, glass cloth and metal foil; the adhesive may be a curable resin. The adhesive zones may extend fully or only part way across the strips. The adhesive may be applied to each layer immediately after it is added to the stack, and before adding the next layer, or it may be applied to the layers before they are brought together. The material may be produced by folding a continuous web upon itself, or by superposing sheets, each of which is folded at at least one end to provide a part of the next layer of the stack. These methods produce a honeycomb material having closed cells at the edges, and portions may therefore be fitted together side by side, as shown in Fig. 7, and facing skins adhesively secured to the slices to close the cells. As shown in Fig. 2, a stack of layers of sheet material 12 from a roll 13 is produced by folding upon a platen 14 slidably mounted on table 15. The table has an upstanding rib 16 which has a sliding fit in a complementary groove in the underside of the platen, to prevent the platen from turning. After each layer has been applied, lines 7 of adhesive are applied by e.g. a printing roller or a silk screen device. The platen is then moved along the table, the sheet material pulled down to cover the adhesive lines, and the next set of adhesive lines applied in staggered relation to the first. Specification 591,772 is referred to.
