Abstract

981,875. Laminates and laminating. DUFAYLITE DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. March 21, 1962 [March 22, 1961], No. 10441/61. Heading B5N. Honeycomb material suitable for the core of sandwich structures is made by applying to a web of paper, thin cardboard or other bibulous material bands of wet adhesive on both sides thereof, the bands on the two sides being relatively staggered, forming at equal intervals along the length of the web lateral lines of spaced slits, or perforations or lateral embossed or scored lines, such that the web folds naturally about the lines, and feeding the web downwardly on to a support at such a rate, related to the length of the suspended web, that it swings to and fro and accumulates on the support as a stack of folded layers. As shown, the web 1, fed from a roll 2, passes between slitting rollers 3, which make lateral lines of spaced slits at equal intervals along its length, is printed on each side with bands of wet adhesive by rollers 7, 8, the bands on the two sides being relatively staggered, and falls upon a support 9 as a layered stack 10, the web folding naturally about the slit lines. Folding may be initiated if necessary by air jets 15. The adhesive bands are preferably so placed that those on one side of the web pass over the slits, and those on the other side over the spaces between them. When a stack of desired size has accumulated the support G, which is wheeled, may be withdrawn quickly, as by an air cylinder 14, whereupon the stack begins to build up on the replacement support G<SP>1</SP>.
