Abstract

An adhesive for uniting the layers of a laminated hollow building unit comprises a mixture of an alkyd resin and a diisocyanate which forms a cellular plastic layer on setting. The alkyd resin may be made from reactants wherein the ratio of hydroxyl to carboxyl groups is between 3 to 1 and 4 to 5. The resin may be prepared from specified proportions of (a) glycerol, adipic acid, and phthalic anhydride; (b) glycerol, 1,4-butylene glycol, and adipic acid; (c) trimethylol propane, adipic acid, and phthalic anhydride; (d) glycerol and adipic acid; (e) trimethylol propane and phthalic anhydride; (f) glycerol, phthalic anhydride, and oleic acid; (g) glycerol, adipic acid, castor oil, and maleic anhydride. The diisocyanate may be metatoluene diisocyanate and the resin may have a water content of 0.1-2.5 per cent. The adhesive may contain a small proportion of a thermoplastic polymeric substance such as ethyl or benzyl cellulose, rubber, chlorinated rubber, vinyl chloride or acetate polymers or copolymers, polystyrene, polydichlorostyrene, or polyvinyl butyral.
