Abstract

A liquid polyester plasticizer is the polycondensation product of glutaric acid and a mixture of 20-65 molecular proportions of 1 : 6-hexanediol and 80-35 molecular proportions of 1 : 5-pentanediol. A minor proportion of the glutaric acid may be replaced by another dicarboxylic acid and a minor proportion of the diols may be replaced by another glycol. Polycondensation may be effected by heating together the glycols with the free acids (e.g. in presence of zinc chloride), the alkyl esters of the acids (e.g. in presence of stannous chloride, litharge, zinc acetate, calcium acetate, tetrabutyl titanate or antimony trioxide), the acid anhydrides or the acid chlorides. The polyesters are particularly useful for plasticizing polyvinyl chloride or copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, unsymmetrical dichloroethylene, styrene or the esters, nitriles and amides of acrylic, methacrylic, fumaric or maleic acids. They may also be used to plasticize chlorinated vinyl chloride polymers, chlorobutadiene-acrylonitrile polymers, chlorinated rubber, nitrocellulose, ethyl cellulose and cellulose acetate. When mixing the polyester with the vinyl chloride resins, the components may be mixed or milled together at a moderately elevated temperature, if desired in presence of an organic solvent or swelling agent for one or both components. Alternatively solutions of the components may be mixed. Fillers, pigments, other plasticizers, stabilizers and antioxidants may be added. In examples polyesters are made from (1), (2) and (3) glutaric acid or dimethyl glutarate, 1 : 6-hexanediol and 1 : 5-pentanediol with the addition of (4) succinic acid, (5) 1 : 4 butanediol, (6) diethylene glycol and 2 : 2-dimethyl-1 : 3-propane diol, and (7) phthalic anhydride and diethylene glycol. In Example (8), 50 parts of each of the above polyesters are mixed with 100 parts of polyvinyl chloride and 4 parts of calcium stearate and then bonded on an open mill to effect gelation, and a sheet obtained from the gel by pressing followed by cooling under pressure.
