Abstract

1404925 Copolyesters E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 20 Feb 1974 [20 Feb 1973 9 Oct 1973] 7728/74 Heading C3R A copolyester elastomer having a melt index of less than 30 and a melting point of 90‹ to 132‹ C. consists of 15 to 50% by weight of short chain ester units derived from butanediol and a mixture of aromatic dicarboxylic acids of molecular weight less than 350 containing 55 to 95% by weight of terephthalic acid, and 50 to 85% by weight of long chain ester units derived from a polytetramethylene ether glycol having an average molecular weight of 1500 to 3500 and the above mixture of aromatic dicarboxylic acids. The copolyester may be mixed with 1 to 99% by weight, based on the total thermoplastic components of a low molecular weight thermoplastic resin which is thermally stable at 150‹ C. and has a melt viscosity of less than 10,000 centipoises at 200‹ C. The compositions may also include U.V.-absorbers, plasticizers, antioxidants or fillers, e.g. wood flour, silicates, silica gel, alumina, clay, chopped fibreglass, titanium dioxide and carbon black. The examples describe a copolyester prepared from dimethyl terephthalate dimethyl isophthalate, 1,4-butanediol and polytetramethylene ether glycol and compositions containing the copolyester and one or more of the following: a polyindene petroleum resin, a vinyl toluene copolymer petroleum resin, an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, a vinyl toluene/α-methyl styrene copolymer, polystyrene, and a rosin based alkyd resin. The pressure sensitive adhesive properties of the compositions are determined by coating polyethylene terephthalate film with the compositions.
