Abstract

1490091 Copolyester compositions E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 29 Oct 1974 [29 Oct 1973 15 Oct 1974] 46736/74 Headings C3R and C3P A thermoplastic composition comprises (1) a copolyester derived from (a) a dicarboxylic acid having a molecular weight of up to 350, (b) a diol having a molecular weight of up to 250 and (c) a glycol having an average molecular weight of 350 to 6000 wherein the copolyester contains 15 to 75% by weight of short chain units (i.e. (a) + (b)) and 25 to 85% by weight of long chain units (i.e. (a) + (c)) and has a melt index of up to 150 and a melting point of at least 90‹ C., and (2) an aromatic or aliphatic anhydride having at least two anhydride groups. The composition may also contain (3) a low molecular weight thermoplastic resin having a melt viscosity of not more than 10,000 cp. at 200‹ C. The composition may be in the form of an aqueous dispersion and may contain stabilizers, fillers, dyes, pigments, plasticizers and flame retardants. The examples describe compositions comprising (1) a copolyester derived from polytetramethylene ether glycol, 1,4- butanediol, dimethyl terephthalate and dimethyl isophthalate or dimethyl adipate, (2) pyromellitic dianhydride, cyclopentane tetracarboxylic dianhydride, naphthalene tetracarboxylic dianhydride, benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride or a styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer, and (3) one or more of the following:-polyindene petroleum resin, polystyrene, polyindene hydrocarbon resin and phenol modified coumarone indene resin, the compositions also containing various stabilizers. The compositions may be used as adhesives.
