Abstract

1419973 Curable polyester resin KOPPERS CO Inc 8 Dec 1972 [10 Dec 1971] 56828/72 Headings C3P and C3R A curable polyester resin composition comprises (a) an ethylenically unsaturated polyester having a molecular weight of 1000 to 4000, an acid number not greater than 30, and a fumarate to maleate weight proportion of at least 80 to 20; the polyester being the polyesterification product of fumaric acid, or maleic acid, maleic anhydride on a mixture thereof and an acyclic polyol which is propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, tripropylene glycol, 224 trimethylpentane 13-diol, or 13-butane-diol or a mixture thereof in which the amount of fumaric acid, maleic acid or maleic anhydride is at least 80 mole per cent of the acid reactant used to prepare the polyester and in which the amount of acyclic polyol is at least 50 mole per cent of the polyol reactant used to prepare the polyester and (b) an ethylenically unsaturated crosslinking agent in an amount such that the molar ratio of the reactive ethylenic unsaturation in the cross-linking agent to the reactive ethylenic unsaturation of the polyester is at least 3 to 1, and wherein at least 50 weight per cent of the cross-linking agent is styrene. The polyester may be prepared from a mixture of the acyclic polyol and hydrogenated bisphenol A, propoxylated bisphenol A, cyclohexanedimethanol, propoxylated tetrabromobisphenol A or 4 : 4<SP>1</SP>- (bis - 2 - hydroxyethylamino)-octochlorobiphenyl. Comparative examples illustrate the advantages of cured resins made according to the invention by measurement of their physical properties.
