Abstract

1433532 Laminates LIBBEY-OWENSFORD CO 7 Aug 1973 [28 Aug 1972] 37463/73 Heading B5N A transparent temperature stable glazing structure for use in vehicles which is free of apparent distortion and birefringence colour comprises a glass layer 12 which is to become the inboard glass surface when the glazing structure is mounted and a penetration resistant protective plastics cover 15 softer than glass, the protective cover including an extensible adhesive layer 16 bonded to the glass, a 0À0005- 0-014 inch thick layer of weathering resistant plastics material 17 over the adhesive layer and an exposed inboard surface that is abrasion resistant. A further layer of glass may be bonded under heat and pressure to the glass layer 12 using a 0À015-0À060 inch thick sheet of polyvinyl butyral. The glass layers may be float glass of thickness 0À040-# inch bonded to the polyvinyl butyral layer with both surfaces out. Adhesive layer 16 may comprise polyvinyl butyral, polyurethane, ionomer resin or plasticized polyvinyl chloride, layer 17 may be polyethylene terephthalate sheeting which has been subjected to stretching in one direction or unbalanced biaxial stretching or of a polyurethane, cellulose ester, acrylic, polyvinyl fluoride or fluorinated ethylene propylene copolymer and layer 18 may be a coating of abrasion resistant plastics material comprising a mixture of polysilicic acid and copolymers of fluorinated monomers with compounds containing secondary alcohol groups or a hydrolysis and condensation product of methyltriethoxy silane. The adhesion of layer 17 to layers 16 and 18 may be improved by subjecting it to electrical, chemical or gas flame treatment. The layers may be bonded together with the application of heat and pressure. The layer of polyvinyl butyral used to bond together the glass layers may be of relatively low adhesion material and the adhesive layer 16 of relatively high adhesion material.
