Abstract

1430987 Impact-resistant transparent laminates SIERRACIN CORP 16 May 1973 [18 May 1972] 23227/73 Heading B5N An impact-resistant transparent laminate comprises a glass ply and a flexible polyethylene terephthalate film, of thickness 1-10 mils, tensile strength >5000 p.s.i. and ultimate elongation < 150%, separated by an interlayer of lesser tensile strength and greater percentage elongation than the film, the film having deposited thereon an abrasion- and chemicalresistant film which forms an outer surface of the laminate. The interlayer may be a plasticized 5-60 mil film of polyvinyl butyral (preferred), polyurethane, polyvinyl acetal or polyvinyl chloride. The polyethylene terephthalate film may have deposited on its inner face by vacuum evaporation or sputtering a thin electroconductive coating of gold, silver or copper. The abrasion and chemical-resistant coating may be polysiloxane, alkyd resin, phenol- or melamineformaldehyde condensate or polyester. The laminate may be made by hot-pressing the plastics films to a glass ply, which may be compound-curved for use as a windscreen by means of a shaped member, the interlayer being roughened to facilitate de-aeration.
