Abstract

1,164,323. Foamed laminates. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 27 Sept., 1967 [10 Oct., 1966], No. 45196/66. Heading B5N. A laminate having a core of foamed plastics or resinous material between two outer facing sheets is formed by applying to one of the sheets a priming layer of foam-forming material and allowing the foaming reaction to proceed, applying thereon a second (main) layer of foamforming material and again allowing foaming to proceed, bringing the second sheet into place while the main foam layer is still tacky, and applying pressure to the laminate whilst curing the foam core. Apparatus for carrying out the process is also described and claimed. Preferably foaming should take place more rapidly in the priming layer, e.g. by application of heat or use of a highly-catalysed foam-forming mixture, in order to minimize the time lag necessary between applying layers. The second layer is preferably applied after the priming layer has developed sufficient mechanical strength to avoid mixing of layers. The priming layer may be used as an adhesive to secure side members, in the form of strips, each by one edge to the margin of the lower facing sheet, thus preventing overflow of the mixture subsequently applied, or to secure reinforcing members, e.g. conduits, or to seal joints between panels of the lower facing. The foam may be polyurethane foam, and the facing materials may be lengths or sheets of paper, wood, plastic, metal, rubber, paperboard, plasterboard, asbestos, bitumenimpregnated paper or roofing felt. As shown, the lower facing sheets in the form of panels 2 are carried on paper sheet 1 fed from a supply roll. Foam-forming mixture is applied from mixing and dispersion heads 3, 6, the reaction in the priming layer being accelerated by infrared heater 5. Rollers 10, 12 cause a continuous sheet of upper facing material to be fed under conveying surface 11. Conveying surfaces 11, 13 are backed by adjustable platens 17, 18 and heated by infra-red heaters 15, 16; the foam is thus cured while pressure is applied via roll 12 and platen 17. The mixing and dispersion heads 3, 6 are mounted for lateral travel across the direction of movement of the panels 2.
