Abstract
843,804. Fabric composed of adhesivelyunited threads. GOODRICH CO., B. F. July 14, 1958 [July 15, 1957], No. 22517/58. Glass 140. A method of producing a ribbon constituting a single unit from a number of continuous rubber threads comprises the steps of continuously forming the threads into a band, urging the threads into edge-to-edge contact in the plane of the band to form a ribbon, vibrating the threads in a direction transverse to the plane of the band to remove cross-overs and localized tensions and applying cement to the band and drying the cement so that the threads become cemented together, the threads being pulled along under light tension throughout the whole process. As shown (Figs. 2 and 3) the threads are drawn off drum 10 over roll 16 which rotates at twice the peripheral speed of the drum and roll 19 rotating at the drum speed, and are spaced by combs 23 and 33, then pass under beaters 36 and 37, over grooved roller 43 and through separator assembly 44 which divides them into groups of threads which are to be cemented to form ribbons. The threads then pass under concave crowding plates 46 and 47, over knurled roll 48, rotating in a direction opposite to the thread motion to vibrate the threads, then over cement applicator roll 49 whose lower portion dips into liquid cement in pan 56, over concave glass crowding roll 52, under scraper 53, and through notches in ribbon guide plate 54. The ribbons then pass, for drying, between upper and lower resistance heaters 73 and through a radiant heater drying section wherein they pass over rolls 74, 76, 77, 78 and 79 and are subjected to radiant heat from infra-red lamps 82. The dried ribbons are then delivered into cartons 133 by peel-off rolls 81, 108, 109 and 111. The threads may be formed initially by slitting thin sheets of coagulated rubber latex and may be vulcanized before use in the process. A suitable cement comprises vinyl chloride plasticized by an acrylonitrile rubber and made tacky by a phenolic resin. A suitable solvent is methyl ethyl ketone.
