757,755. Cathode-ray tubes. MULLARD RADIO VALVE CO., Ltd. May 14, 1954, No. 14194/54. Class 39 (1). A magnetic focusing device for a cathode-ray tube comprises a U-sectioned sheath of soft ferromagnetic material, the two parts 1, 2 of which are relatively adjustable axially as by threaded parts 4 and enclosing a hollow cylindrical permanent magnet 8 axially magnetized, one end of the magnet being secured to one end wall of the sheath so that one pole is produced at the end wall of the sheath and the other pole is formed at the free end of the magnet or by a separate pole-piece 12 between the legs of the sheath. The pole-piece 12 is secured to magnet 8 by adhesive and the spacing between members 12, 2 can be adjusted by soft iron shims between 8 and 2. Sheath part 1 becomes a pole-piece of the same polarity as member 2. The design is such as to concentrate the field at the axis and to reduce stray fields as far as possible.
