Abstract

753,311. Coating by vapour deposition. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 8, 1954 [March 6, 1953], No. 6219/53. Class 82(2). In a method of forming a deposit on a surface by evaporation from effective line sources which are not long compared with the length of the surface, the quantity of material provided along the lengths of said sources is graduated so that a deposit of substantially uniform thickness is formed. As applied, for example, to the formation of a deposit of photo-conductive material on the target electrode of a television pick-up tube, the material, e.g. SbS3, is provided on V-shaped metal, e.g. Ta, troughs 1, 2 mounted on a metal frame 5 having a rectangular opening 6, and the whole arrangement placed inside the pick-up tube envelope so as to frame the surface 3 which is to be provided with the deposit. Each of the evaporators 1, 2 is provided with five equally spaced beads of SbS3, the weights of which are in the ratio 4 : 3 : 2 : 3 : 4, the larger beads being at the ends of the evaporators. Preferably, eddy current heating is used to heat the evaporators and so vaporise the material. The process may also be used for evaporating material through stencils or fine meshes.
