Abstract
752,598. Tuning resonant cavities &c. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. June 28, 1954 [July 17, 1953], No. 18917/54. Class 40 (8). [Also in Group XL (a)] A capacitive tuning device for a waveguide or a resonant cavity in a klystron comprises a pair of parallel conductive plates 25, 26 connected together and arranged to form capacitors with-the upper and lower walls 12, 13 of the cavity. The device lowers the resonant frequency of the cavity as it is moved from a region of low electric intensity to a region of high intensity. The conductive plates are in the form of metallic coatings on a dielectric plunger 22. The plunger may be connected to a bellows 31 which is movable by means of a stud 37 threaded into the counterbore of an adjusting screw 35. In order to prevent leakage of energy from the cavity the gap between the plunger 22 and the side walls forms a waveguide whose cut-off frequency is greater than the operating frequency of the cavity. The device may be applied to vary the wavelength, attenuation or matching characteristics of a waveguide.
