Abstract
904,864. Impedance matching. EITEL-McCULLOUGH Inc. Dec. 16, 1958 [Jan. 31, 1958], No. 40523/58. Class 40 (8). [Also in Group XL (a)] A klystron tube which can be used as an amplifier comprises a gun 11, a collector 12, a cavity resonator 20 coupled to the beam and having an opening 37 therein for connecting a waveguide transmission system thereto, a pair of diaphragms 38, 39 movable to control the size of the opening, and rotatable screw-andshaft means 43, 44, 46 for moving the diaphragms simultaneously towards and away from each other linearly to form an adjustable iris. A dial indicator can be coupled to the screws 43, 44. The iris shown is an inductive iris but a capacitive iris may be used. The external portion of the cavity resonator 20 is shown integral with the klystron tube but it may be formed separately and clamped to the tube. Three tunable cavity resonators 18, 19, 20 are shown, the input being applied to the resonator 18. A pair of tuning plungers 71, 72, Figs. 2, 4 and 5, of box-like construction, are moved by tuning screws 68, 69 and are provided with contact fingers 85 frictionally engaging the walls 26, 27, the side wall 28 and the diaphragms 38, 39 of the resonator. The walls 77 and 79 of each plunger have an end configuration which has a straight portion 87, a curved portion 88 having the configuration of the dielectric window 22 forming part of the tube envelope, and a straight portion 89 extending towards the opening 37. A mesh screen 86 forms one wall of the plunger providing means for circulating air through the cavity to cool the window 22. The diaphragms 38, 39 are provided with teeth 41, 42 which engage the screws 44, 43 and are guided in the grooves 47, 48 in the plates 26, 27, and the edges of the diaphragms are provided with means for making electrical contact in the grooves. The diaphragm 38 is guided between the plates 26, 27 by the pins 57 extending inwardly from the wall 29 and the diaphragm 39 is guided by the pins 58 extending inwardly from the wall 31. The pins may be the screws 57, 58 which engage one end of the web members 63, 64. The screws 61, 62 engage the other end of the web members which receive the tuning screws 68, 69. The open construction of the web members enables air to be blown through the resonant cavity to cool the window 22.
