752,397. Rolling. HYDROPRESS, Inc. May 14, 1954 [May 14, 1953], No. 14134/54. Class 83 (4). In a rolling mill for sheet and strip with working rolls 12, 13, Fig. 1, and backing rolls 14, 15 in slightly offset relation, a row of auxiliary rolls 23 is disposed along one of the working rolls 13, each being urged with variable pressure in response to variations in the thickness of the material being rolled in order to maintain a constant thickness. The auxiliary rolls 23, Fig. 3, are supported on yokes 24 of hydraulic cylinders 26 the internal pressures of which are separately controlled through solenoid valves 30 from axially disposed thickness gauges 28 transmitting electrical signals to meters 29 and indicating variations from a predetermined thickness. The upper working roll 12 is supported laterally between rolls 18, 19 on fixed brackets 20, 21. For rolling sheet which is tapered in the longitudinal direction the roll pass is varied by screw downs 48 which are rotated in nut members 49 by an electric motor 44 and worm gears 47, the thickness of the strip across its width being maintained uniform by the auxiliary rolls 23. The rate at which the motor 44 rotates for tapering is controlled from a mechanism 43 which automatically compensates for elastic deformation in the mill. The power required for pass adjustments is reduced by hydraulic pressure in a cylinder 51 acting on the end of the screw-downs 18 to relieve a substantial portion of the load on the nut 49.
