A pair of shutters 8, 9 for a socket connector 21 are rotatable about a common pivot 12 and are actuated from the operative position, in which they bear against stops 19, by a link 13 formed of springy wire bent to U -shape with the ends 17 of the limbs crossed and connected to heel portions 18 of the shutters. A leaf-spring 20 formed with a ramp 23 bears against the base 14 of the link so that when the earth pin of a plug engages the ramp, the link is moved to rotate the shutters, the ends 17 at the same time being separated to stress the link and thereby provide the spring bias for returning the shutters on removal of the plug. Fig. 4 shows a modification wherein the link is L-shaped and actuates a single shutter 55. One limb 53b of the link rests against a pair of ramps 62, 63 secured to the socket body, the end of said limb being pivoted on an anchor pin 60 and having a tail 61 bearing against a fixed part of the socket. Thus, when the earth pin bears against the portion of the link between the ramps, the link is pressed down the ramps to actuate the shutter and is stressed at the same time. The ramps may be replaced by inclined slots in parallel plates (Fig. 6, not shown), the link in this case being U-shaped and actuating a pair of shutters. A locking device for a pair of shutters 8, 9, Figs. 8 and 9, may be provided, comprising a sliding member 36 having a portion 37 normally entering between and locking the shutters. Member 36 is secured to the base 14b of U-shaped link 13b and has a ramp 35 for engagement by the earth pin 32. The ends of the link engage slots 39 in the shutters which provide sufficient lost-motion on the initial engagement of the ramp by the earth pin to permit removal of the lock from the shutters. Fig. 10 shows a single sliding shutter 40 actuated by a U-shaped link 13c, the base 14c of which co-operates with ramps 30, 31 similarly to the Fig. 4 embodiment. The ends of the link engage longitudinal slots 45 in the shutter and are moved along them, on operation of the shutter, by a wedge 44 fixed to the socket, thereby stressing the link.
