Abstract

682,727. Two-part couplings. CRABTREE & CO., Ltd., J. A., MORGAN, R. W., and COLEMAN, E. April 16, 1951 [Aug. 29, 1950], No. 21301/50. Class 38 (i). A shuttered socket embodying the features of Specification 666,098 comprises a cover c having an approximately triangular-shaped recess b slidably housing shutters a, a<SP>1</SP>, and closed by an insulating plate d. The shutters a, a<SP>1</SP> have projections k whereby they are urged by a spring g, encircling a fixed boss h, to cover rectangular live-pin receiving openings d<SP>1</SP> in the plate d. Insertion of the earth-pin into opening m moves the shutters lengthwise whereby they bridge the openings d<SP>1</SP>, further insertion causing the live pins to engage the chamfered shutter surfaces a<SP>3</SP> and move these ends of the shutters towards each other, the pins passing through the openings d<SP>1</SP>, m, to engage the socket contacts. Any attempt made to move the shutters by a foreign body inserted in the live-pin openings results in the shutters tilting and becoming locked within the openings d<SP>1</SP>, there being sufficient clearance between the shutters, cover c, and plate d, to permit this. Additional locking may be obtained by an abutment b<SP>2</SP> on the cover c which co-operates with ribs a<SP>5</SP> on the shutters, the ribs being disengaged from the abutment upon insertion of the earth pin.
