Abstract

747,886. Hull construction. ALBIACH, V. Feb. 18, 1954 [Feb. 18, 1953], No. 4864/54. Addition to 701,759. Class 113. In a ship's hull construction as claimed in any of the Claims of the parent Specification, the continuity of a divided longitudinal (or transverse) girder passing through a transverse (or longitudinal) bulkhead is preserved by means of a connecting member or assembly connected to the two ends of the girder and passing through the bulkhead, the effective crosssectional area of the connecting member or assembly together with the part of the plating (or deck, as the case may be) between the two ends of the girder being at least equal to or greater than the normal effective cross-sectional area of the girder and associated plating (or deck), while the effective centres of area of the two cross sections are arranged to lie at approximately the same distance from the plating or deck. Various embodiments are described. Figs. 4 and 5 show one of the simplest. The ends 21 of a T-section longitudinal, cut short on either side of a bulkhead 22, are shaped downwards so that a connecting member 26 fitted above the longitudinal lies at such a height that the effective centre of area of the composite section consisting of the connecting element 26 and the associated plating 23 is approximately at the same height as the effective centre of area of the longitudinal and associated plating at its normal section. The thick plate connecting element 26 passes through a flange 27 which is welded to it and to the bulkhead. Stiffeners 28 join the flanges of the longitudinal to the plating.
