Abstract
627,621. Ship construction. BILHAM, W. C. Jan. 18, 1947, No. 1716. [Class 113 (ii)] A hull is constructed of plates 1 bent along a pair of opposite edges to form flanges 2 by means of which adjacent plates are secured together and which form reinforcing ribs within the assembled hull, one or more of mid flanges being themselves bent, beyond the line of connection, into an angle or L-section form. Deep flanges may be provided as at 2a to form floor bearers, or as at 2b to form pedestals for stanchions 13. The deck is constructed of plates 7 assembled similarly to the hull plates, flanges 8 being connected to the hatch coaming 9 and flanges 10 to the side plates, the nesting L-section flanges 2 of these side and deck plates forming the gunwale. The side and bottom plates are assembled with their flanges nesting together and forming reinforcing members, but if further transverse stiffening is required the members such as plates 16 or metal tubes 20 may be attached to the flanges. The plates 16 have a flange by which they are secured to the hull plates.
