[Class 113 (ii)] [Also in Group XXI] A cellular honeycomb structure of longitudinal cells forms the outer part of the whole or a part of the ship or other floating structure surrounding a central space ; the honeycomb structure is formed by welding together plates of channel or trough shape ; the cells and the central space are divided by plates or bulkheads and the cells and part of the central space carry cargo, e.g. oil. The bottom of the vessel may be completed in dry dock, and the vessel then floated off and completed while floating. Fig. 4 shows part of a tanker so formed, in which a pump n fills the tiers of cells through holes m from the bottom upwards, and valves p, s operated from the deck at q allow several tiers to be filled simultaneously. The skin of the vessel and the wall surrounding the central space may be formed of plates of channel section welded or riveted together; the bulkheads may be formed similarly.
