Abstract
1,111,809. Floating platforms. CANADIAN PATENTS & DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. 21 Dec., 1965 [18 Jan., 1965], No. 54179/65. Heading E1H. A floating platform or structure for submarine drilling-operations a deck 12, Fig. 1, upon a hollow cylindrical body having a perforated side-wall 11 and bottom 14, said wall being contituted by coaxial plates 26, 27, Fig. 2, which are connected to. each other by radiallyorientated tubes 28 aligned with holes 24 in the plates so as to form an annular space that renders, the body buoyant, the water of floatation being able to flow into or out of the in- 'terior of the body through said tubes and thereby diminish the motion of the body in response to wave-action. The bottom 14 is generally similar to the wall 11 and may contain ballasting material (not shown). Ballasting may also be effected by water in the bottom of the aforesaid annular space, which water can be expelled by compressed air. The structure is moored by a plurality of chains 17<SP>1</SP>. Alternatively, the structure may carry an observatory, Fig. 11, the wall 11 and bottom 14 being made of concrete and connected to a coaxial cylindrical imperforate body 51, 52 by a plurality of perforated radial walls 56. The body 51, 52 renders the structure buoyant and is divided into a plurality of compartments for ballasting water by walls (54), Fig. 12 (not shown). The uppermost portion of the wall 11 carries a wind-deflecting barrier, or so-called flange, 67 that comprises a plurality of upwardly-curved ducts 69 to divert the air-stream away from the superstructure 15, 16. The structure may be either kept on station or navigated by a propeller (60), Figs. 14 and 15 (not shown), and a rudder (61) mounted on each of two diametrally-opposed tubular-members or ducts (62) attached to the lowermost portion of the wall 11.
