Abstract

825,717. Longitudinal stiffening in tankers. GOTAVERKEN A.B. April 24. 1957 [April 28, 1956], No. 13099/57. Class 113. A tanker having a stern engine room has longitudinal stiffening members comprised in the cargo areas extending into the engine room, the members extending from the upper deck 3 to the bottom plating 2 on either side of the forward engine room bulkhead. This is effected by either extending longitudinal bulkheads 4 into the engine room, as in the case of a single engined ship, or in the case of a ship with two main engines by replacing longitudinal girders 5 by a vertical longitudinal bulkhead 16, in the two stern most tanks 12, 13, cofferdam 14 and bunker tank 15 and extending the bulkhead into the engine room between the two main engines ; the longitudinal bulkheads 4 also extend into the engine room and they may diverge outwardly from the middle line. A further embodiment describes the longitudinal bulkheads 4 being extended to the stern peak bulkhead while the central longitudinal girders 5 terminate at the cofferdam. Platforms e.g. 7 and 8 are arranged to divide the space between the longitudinal bulkheads and side plating into compartments and corresponding platforms 9 in the engine room. The longitudinal bulkheads may entirely or partly consist of corrugated plate.
