Abstract

21,445. Hunter, G. B., Black, D. F., and Rusett, E. W. de. Sept. 28. Vessels for bulk cargoes.-Tank ships are so constructed that each tank is provided with downwardly-extending diaphragm plates dividing up the surface of the liquid .cargo into compartments open beneath to the general bulk. The longitudinal bulkhead in the tank H is dispensed with, and longitudinal wash-plates Care fitted as shown. The outboard spaces D of the upper part of the ship are fitted with air-cocks O, O and oil-tight hatches E<1>. The expansion chamber B may be carried up above the deck level or may be stopped at the deck. By this construction, the only free surface occurs in the expansion chamber B, reducing movement of the cargo to a minimum. The plates C act also as girders, and may be placed transversely as well as or instead of longitudinally. The aircocks 0 in one modification establish communication with the expansion chamber B; and in further modifications the longitudinal plates form complete bulkheads, and transverse washplates are then used.
