Abstract

23,854. Stewart, J. W., and Clark, G. W. Nov. 25. Ballasting; bulkheads; compartments; hatches. -Water ballast, liquid fuel, and loose cargoes are carried in fore-and-aft water-tight compartments A formed centrally between longitudinal bulkheads J. These compartments are fitted with long water-tight batches N, which open in halves transversely, and the hatch covers B, when turned back against the pillars K, form shoots for loose cargo. At each side of the compartments A are cargo holds M with separate hatches G, of ordinary construction, for facilitating the loading and unloading. The compartments A are not continued through the engine and boiler-room space, the longitudinal strength of the vessel is increased by the fore-and-aft bulkheads J, the pillars K, and the girders L, and no shifting boards are required in the lower holds when the vessel is used for carrying grain.
