118,898. Alien, F., and Little, T. R. Sept. 20, 1917. Ballasting and trimming. - In ships of the type divided by longitudinal and transverse bulkheads into a series of cargo compartments A, A<1>, B, the counterpart compartments A, A<1> on opposite sides are connected in pails by transverse conduits D provided with sluice valves E. By this means, when a compartment on one side of the ship is damaged the entering water can be passed through to the opposite compartment to keep the ship in trim. The transverse conduits may be formed in the double bottom. Automatic valves mav be arranged at both ends of the conduits to prevent cargo such as grain from passing through whilst freely permitting the passage of water.
