Abstract
20,542. Frear, H. P. Sept. 11. Vessels modified for loading and unloading.- Cargo vessels having a central hold for dense cargoes and side and bottom compartments for liquid cargo are provided with means, preferably in the form of trunks, for giving access to the bottom compartments when the side compartments are loaded. In addition, piping arrangements for the liquid cargo are fitted. The vessel 1 is provided with an inner bottom 8 situated at a much greater distance above the keel than usual, and longitudinal bulkheads 11, forming a central hold. This hold, together with the side compartments, is divided hy transverse bulkheads into compartments 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 13. Liquid cargo compartments are also provided fore and aft. The total capacity of the compartments 10, 13 is greater than that of the central hold. Trunks 18 extend from the deck to the holds 10 facilitating unloading at all times. The side compartments are loaded or unloaded by means of a main pipe line 20 having branches 21 to each compartment, fitted with valves. A similar pipe arrangement is fitted in the compartments 9, 10. The valves at each compartment are adapted to be operated from the deck. The various compartments are so proportioned with respect to the width of the vessel that the metacentric height will not be altered by modification of the cargo.
