Abstract
27,281. Fraser, G. Dec. 27. Ships' hulls; bulkheads; grain-carrying vessels.- Relates to vessels for carrying cargoes in bulk, and consists in subdividing them by transverse and longitudinal bulkheads to facilitate loading and unloading, and to prevent the cargo from shifting. Fig. 1 shows a plan, Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 a transverse section of a vessel propelled by a single screw. The cargo space is divided by a pair of longitudinal bulkheads A, A placed close together, and by transverse bulkheads G, G. Each compartment is provided with a hatchway, and with doors I, I into the central space 0, which can be used for cargoes of a light nature. In unloading, the cargo falls through the doors I, I into a bucket or scoop J, which is lowered between the frames E, E. The bulkheads A, A rest on keelsons E<1>, E', and the transverse bulkheads on frames E, E. The bottoms of the compartments may be inclined as shown in Fig. 7, which is a cross-section of a twinscrew vessel. In such vessels the longitudinal bulkheads run through the engine and boiler rooms, and the space between them can be used as bunkers or store-rooms.
