A side deck structure for a cargo ship with wide hatches 12 comprises above the normal working height above the deck below, and in place of the conventional single deck, a double deck 13 of cellular box construction. The cellular box structure comprises the top of the sheer strake of the hull 11, decks 14 and 15, hatch coaming 17, and longitudinal girders 16. The spaces 18 within the box structure may carry waterballast.
