Abstract

746,459. Centrifugal separators. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Aug. 18, 1954 [Aug. 19, 1953], No. 24001/54. Class 23. In apparatus for separating liquid from vapour comprising a group of vertical axis centrifugal separators 2 discharging vapour into a common collector 1, each separator has an inlet tube 7 and a discharge pipe 10<SP>1</SP> for liquid. The apparatus is installed in a forced flow, once through, tubulous vapour generator and enables the parallel tube circuits of the generator to be selectively flushed. Each separator has an internal sleeve 3 into which liquid and vapour to be separated is downwardly and tangentially supplied by an inlet tube 7, any excess liquid passing directly through the annulus surrounding the sleeve to a water trap 13 which is provided with a drain pipe 6<SP>1</SP>. The vapour is removed from the collector by pipes 9, the longitudinal velocity of vapour flow in the collector not exceeding 0À5 metres per second so that liquid entrained in the vapour may be separated by gravity. The velocity of flow in the inlet tube 7 is at least 20 metres per second. In a modification, a second inlet tube 7<SP>1</SP> may be fitted to each separator.
