Abstract

Dicyclopentadienyl iron is prepared by reacting cyclopentadiene in benzene solution with ethyl magnesium bromide and ferric chloride in ether solution.ALSO:A hydrocarbon fuel for spark ignition engines contains 0.01 per cent to 1 per cent by weight of dicyclopentadienyl iron. The hydrocarbon fuel may be gasoline, which may contain paraffinic, naphthenic and aromatic hydrocarbons; n-heptane, methylcyclohexane and 2-methyl pentane are also specified. Tetraethyl lead and lead scavenging agents such as ethylene dichloride and ethylene dibromide, antioxidants, stabilizers and dyes may also be added to the fuels. The fuels are compared with fuels containing tetraethyl lead and iron pentacarbonyl and mixtures thereof. Specification 606,282 [Group X] is referred to.
