Abstract

A hydrocarbon fuel of the gasoline boiling range has incorporated therein phenyltrimethyl lead, preferably in an amount of at least 0,5 ml. per U.S. gallon of hydrocarbon fuel, to improve the octane number thereof. The fuel preferably has an unleaded octane number of at least 85, and may contain at least 20%, preferably 20-60%, by volume of aromatic hydrocarbons, from 0-30% by volume of olefinic hydrocarbons, and not more than 80%, preferably 20-60%, by volume of paraffinic and naphthenic hydrocarbons. Optional additives referred to are lead tetraethyl, iron carbonyls, manganese and iron cyclopentadienyls, ethylene chloride or bromide, and other conventional additives.
