Abstract
A hydrocarbon fuel boiling in the gasoline boiling range, having an octane number of at least 85 and containing at least 20% aromatic hydrocarbons, not more than 25% of olefinic hydrocarbons, and at least 25% of paraffinic and naphthenic hydrocarbons, contains sufficient ethyltrimethyl lead to improve the octane number. A preferred base fuel contains 25 to 65% of aromatic hydrocarbons and 35 to 50% of paraffinic and naphthenic hydrocarbons. From 0,5 to 4 ml. per U.S. gallon of the lead compound may be added. Other lead alkyls such as tetra-ethyl and dimethyl-diethyl lead, iron carbonyl and cyclopentadienyl derivatives of iron and manganese, scavengers such as ethylene chloride or bromide, and surface ignition suppressants containing phosphorus may be added.
