Abstract

866,610. Liquid fuels. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 6, 1958 [Oct. 11, 1957; Dec. 2, 1957 (3); Dec. 23, 1957; March 7, 1958; March 10, 1958; April 14, 1958; June 19, 1958; June 27, 1958], No. 31794/58. Class 91. A hydrocarbon fuel in the gasoline boiling range contains an organo-lead anti-knock agent, at least 10% volume of high octane components selected from olefinic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons and mixtures thereof, and from 0.1 to 5% volume of one or more octane appreciators having the general formla: R<SP>1</SP>(X) n (R<SP>2</SP>) m COOR, [R<SP>1</SP>(X) n (R<SP>2</SP>) m CO] 2 O, or R<SP>1</SP>CHO wherein R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or a monovalent hydrocarbyl radical containing 1-29 carbon atoms, R<SP>2</SP> is a divalent hydrocarbyl radical containing 1-18 carbon atoms, R is hydrogen or a tertiary aliphatic hydrocarbyl radical containing 4 to 18 carbon atoms, X is R<SP>1</SP> being a monovalent hydrocarbyl radical when X is -O-, n and m are 0 or 1, where m is O and n is 1, X is only C=O, and the total number of carbon atoms in R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and X is not more than 29. Effective appreciators are thus monocarboxylic acids of 1-30 carbon atoms, their anhydrides and t-alkyl esters and the ether- and keto-substituted derivatives of such acids, and also aldehydes. Many examples of all these classes of compounds are given. The fuel may contain additionally at least 0.1% volume of one or more arylamines having the formula R<SP>3</SP>NHR<SP>4</SP> wherein R<SP>3</SP> is a monocyclic aryl, a bicyclic aryl or alkaryl hydrocarbyl radical containing 6-16 carbon atoms and R<SP>4</SP> is hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl radical containing 1-12 carbon atoms. These amines, of which examples are given, are said to react synergistically with the octane appreciators to improve the octane rating of the leaded fuel. The aromatic and/or olefin content of the fuel can constitute up to 100% volume thereof but is usually between 20 and 80% volume. Organo-lead anti-knock agents specified are tetra-ethyl, -methyl, -butyl, -amyl, and -propyl lead. An ethylene chloride-ethylene bromide mixture is employed as scavenger.
