Abstract

1-alkoxypropyl-2-nitrates are prepared by nitrating the corresponding alcohol. In an example, propylene oxide is reacted with methanol to produce 1-methoxypropan-2-ol, which is nitrated to 1-methoxypropyl-2-nitrate.ALSO:Distillate diesel fuel oils contain a minor proportion of an alkoxy-substituted propyl nitrate, the alkoxy group containing not more than 5 carbon atoms, as a cetane number improver. Optional additives which may be present include chlorinated wax/phenol/phthalyl chloride condensation product, and olefin/ maleic anhydride condensation product.
