Abstract

547,101. Carboxylic halides. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Feb. 5,1941, No. 1530. Convention date, Feb. 12, 1940. [Class 2 (iii)] Carboxylic chlorides and bromides are prepared by treating organic compounds containing a saturated hydrocarbon chain which may form part of an alicyclic or heterocyclic ring with oxalyl chloride or bromide, carbonyl chloride or bromide, or a mixture of carbon monoxide and chlorine or bromine in presence of actinic light or of a peroxide. Compounds which may be so treated are straight or branched chain hydrocarbons, saturated petroleum fractions such as saturated gasolines, kerosenes, white oils, and paraffin waxes, saturated alicyclic hydrocarbons, (menthane, camphane, naphthenes and decahydronaphthalene), alkyl halides (cetyl chloride and chlorinated kerosene), alkaryl hydrocarbons, polycyclic hydrocarbons (pinene and tetrahydronaphthalene), and heterocyclic hydrocarbons (ethyl thiophene, piperidine, acetyl piperidine, and decahydrocarbazole). Examples give the preparation of carboxylic chlorides from cyclohexane, methyl cyclohexane, chlorocyclohexane, cyclopentane, methylcyclopentane, pentane, heptane, iso-octane, toluene, cetane, white mineral oil, pinene, dodecyl benzene, dodecyl cyclohexane, ethyl thiophene, paraffin wax, and butyl chloride (forming chloropentanoic acid). The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the production of carboxylic halides from aliphatic carboxylic acids and acid chlorides (palmitic and stearic acids and their chlorides), aliphatic sulphonic acids and sulphonyl chlorides as prepared from saturated - white mineral oils by the method of U.S.A. Specification 2,046,090, aliphatic alcohols (dodecyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol and hydrogenated higher fatty acids and esters), aliphatic aldehydes and ketones (heptaldehyde, lauric aldehyde, pentadecanone - 8 and heptadecanone -8), aliphatic esters (methyl stearate, ethyl palmitate, lard, palm oil and coconut oil) and acylated amines (N - dodecyl acetamide and N - cetyl propionamide). Examples are given of the preparation of carboxylic acid chlorides from styrene and diphenyl ethylene, in which case actinic light or peroxide is stated to be unnecessary. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
