Abstract

A fuel suitable for starting internal combustion engines at low temperatures comprises essentially a mixture of several lower hydrocarbons in the following percentages by volume, C2 not more than 5 per cent, C3 from 10 to 25 per cent, C4 from 15 to 45 per cent. and C5 from 30 to 40 per cent. Preferably there is also added C6-C8 hydrocarbons or ordinary or aviation gasoline in an amount from 10 to 25 per cent. by volume of the final fuel mixture. The hydrocarbons employed may be normal or iso-paraffins or olefins or mixtures of these and various fuel ingredients may be added also such as top lubricants, anti-detonation agents and gum inhibitors. In the examples fuel compositions are described consisting of (1) propane, isobutane, n-butane, isopentane, n-pentane and neohexane, (2) propane, isobutane, n-butane, isopentane, neohexane and isooctane and (3) propane, n-butane, isopentane and aviation gasoline.
