Abstract

745,999. Coating with metals. COMMONWEALTH ENGINEERING CO. OF OHIO. March 30, 1954, No. 9306/54. Class 82(2). A metallic object is coated with chromium by heating the object to a temperature above the decomposition point of chromium hexacarbonyl which is supplied in a vaporised form in an inert carrier gas at atmospheric pressure. The metals coated are steel and cast-iron. The process is accomplished by vaporising solid hexacarbonyl in a carburetter 7 and contacting it with the inert carrier gas (CO 2 or N 2 ) at a temperature in the range 100‹-290‹F. and passing the mixed vapours into the chamber B through a nozzle 20 at atmospheric temperature to contact the object to be plated, the object 23 being heated at a temperature from 550‹-700‹F. The gas flow is from 1-3 litres per minute. The gas is contained in a cylinder 1 and passes through coil 6, which surrounds the carburetter 7 both being immersed in a bath 10 of hot oil the temperature of which is controlled by a thermostat 13 and stirrer 15. A pump 19 drives the gas through nozzle 20. The chamber B has a water jacket 28, workpiece supporting and electric heating means 24, 25, and a trap 33 to condense any surplus hexacarbonyl from the exhaust gases.
