[Also in Group VI] A smooth, relatively hard, travelling surface, e.g. the portion 5<SP>1</SP>, sloping upwardly at about 25 degrees, of a polyvinyl chloride conveyer band 5, receives showered cut tobacco at such an angle that hard particles such as stalks tend to bounce and slip rearwardly thereover while softer particles such as leaf shreds tend to remain thereon and be carried forward thereby. A picker roller 2 delivers cut tobacco from a hopper feed-out roller 1 to a winnower 3 which throws it so that the leaf shreds fall mainly on the belt 5 in front of a wall 9 and the stalks and leaf shreds entrained thereby mainly pass over the wall 9 and fall on the belt portion 5<SP>1</SP> for separation in the manner of the invention, the leaf shreds thus separated out passing under the wall 9 for delivery with the other leaf shreds to a tape 13 in the trough 12 of a continuous-rod cigarette-making machine. The belt 5 has a tensioning slide 20 and a cleaning brush 23 and is driven from the machine mainshaft 18. On machine stoppage any piling-up of tobacco is on the belt 5 rather than in the trough 12. In the Provisional Specification the wall 9 is omitted.
