744,434. Exhaust silencers. KYFFIN, F. H. Oct. 18, 1954 [Oct. 16, 1953], No. 28568/53 Class 7(2) A narrow peripheral space 18 is provided between outer and inner casings 10, 11 and an inlet pipe 14 projecting into the casing 11 has outlet means for the discharge of gases into that casing the walls of which are provided with holes 25 allowing the gases to flow into. along and around the space 18 and towards the Inlet end' of the silencer; the gases then flow into a return pipe 20 and towards the outlet 15 of the silencer. As shown, the casing 11 is closed by end plates 16 19 in which the pipes; 14, 20 ' are secured in parallel relation, the plate- 16 also- -closing the space 18 at one end thereof, and both plates being spaced from the end plates 12, 13 of the casing 10 to form expansion chambers 17, 26. The cross-sections of the casing are round, oval or rectangular, and the cross-section of one casing may be different from that of the other casing. The pipe 14 has an ,extension 14a which is provided with multiple rows of perforations 22, or long slots, or has an open end 21. The expansions chambers may be packed! with sounddeadening material such as glass-wool, and several: silencers may be connected' in series. Cooling of the gases is facilitated dueto the relatively thin layer of gas circulating in the space 18. Specifications: 638,666, 680;376, 686,905 and 699,969 are referred to:
