Abstract

560,397. Exhaust silencers. HALEY, T. Nov. 23,1942, No. 16550. [Class 7 (ii)] Exhaust gases are cooled and silenced by air flowing through a casing or jacket 6 surround. ing two or more passages or manifolds 1, 2, 3 for the gases, the passages, which are large enough to reduce the gas pressure quickly, opening at their rearward ends into the jacket where the latter communicates with an expansion chamber 23 by means of a number of constricted openings 8 which separate baffles 10 on to which the hot gases impinge and through which cooling air passes. A nose piece 18 on the forward end of the casing 6 directs air thereinto and a fan 20 in the nose piece assists the air flow. Exhaust gases leak into the boss of the fan through a pipe 20a to guard it against freezing. Partitions 25, 26 in the expansion chamber 23 and its outlet member 24 are provided with restricted orifices. These orifices and the openings 8 may take the form of fish tails and have perforated walls. In a modification, a flame trap 27, Fig. 5, having a ported wall 29 and inclined baffles 31 in its interior communicates through a perforated screen 30 with a cut-off portion of the passage 2.
