Class 38(5) A speed control device for an electric motor comprises a rotor 10 driven by the motor shaft 11 and carrying a fixed and a co-operating moving contact (Fig. 1, not shown) supplied through slip rings 15, 18, the moving contact being carried on the end of a cantilever spring arm 16 biased by a steel tension spring 19 to conta,ct-open position, the contacts being closed by centrifugal force at a predetermined motor speed. A permanent magnet 26 mounted eccentric to the shaft 11 magnetizes at each shaft revolution a soft iron pole piece 24 carried by the rotor whereby the spring 19 is attracted to the pole piece at each revolution and the moving contact is momentarily opened. Two diametricallyopposite magnets may be provided to open the contacts twice per shaft revolution.
